The Alpine School District–the largest in the state–is one step closer to implementing a new redistricting map, following a recommendation by the Alpine board late last year.
School board member Amber Bonner emphasized that the committee actively sought input from parents and educators in its deliberations and tried to minimize disruptions to existing school boundaries.
“We tried to keep school boundaries together as much as possible, and all of the board members gave input into the needs of the schools and neighborhoods in their areas,” Ms. Bonner wrote in a Facebook post. “Please understand that this was an incredibly complicated process. We had to work around Senate House and State School Board seat boundaries. We also had to stay within ‘census blocks,’ which is how the census lines were drawn.”
Board member Julie King was more blunt. It was “the world’s worst Sudoku puzzle,” she said.
The new district configurations will likely lead to a reshuffling of the district board members and their corresponding neighborhood schools. The board’s recommendation will proceed to the county commissioners, but changes won’t be enacted until at 2023.
